A young woman smiling as she holds a small child in her arms after adoption. Are you looking for adoption options in Texas and don’t know where to begin? Our law firm has your back! Making, or considering, the option to adopt is a big life choice. You want to be educated and clear on what to expect, as well as know what the process looks like.

Requirements for Adoption

The state of Texas does have licensing requirements for those seeking to adopt or foster a child. The purpose of this is to ensure that you are not only ready for such a big change but that the child will be safe in your care. You must also be willing to do the following:

  • Complete an application
  • Be 21 years of age or older
  • Be financially responsible
  • Undergo a home visit with all members of the household
  • Participate in free training regarding abuse and neglect
  • Show proof of marriage or proof of divorce
  • Provide references

Knowing what you are looking for in adoption is a critical component to finding the right match for you and your family. The answers to these questions will also help you establish what type of agency you may want to work with.  Some questions to ask yourself include:

  • How much money am I looking to spend on adoption?
  • Do I want to adopt internationally?
  • Do I want my child to have contact with their birth parents?

The Three Main Adoption Categories

Once you’ve answered these questions, you can go on to consider the three main categories of adoption. These categories are typically foster care, international, and domestic adoption.

Foster Care Adoption

Foster care adoption deals with children whose parents have had their parental rights terminated by the court. Although not impossible, it is less likely for you to have an infant adopted through this option because usually, the parents have been provided a length of time to correct their actions.

International Adoption

International adoption is when you adopt a child from another country, with similar circumstances to foster care adoption. This is an excellent option if you are looking for a diverse family.

Domestic Infant Adoption

Lastly, domestic infant adoption is the voluntary and permanent adoption of a baby from its birth parent, who typically chooses who will adopt them. Depending on what you decide is best for you will determine how you should move forward in the process.

Cost of Adopting

The cost of adoption will vary depending on the type of adoption. Adopting through a public state agency often includes the cost of licensure to adopt, which can include fingerprints, CPR training, health tests, and any kind of home safety items like smoke detectors. There are also legal fees that will be necessary. Families may also ask for reimbursement of expenses for up to $1,200 for reasonable expenses. With a private agency, you will likely pay a higher cost due to the services they include.
