Reflecting on National Adoption Month 2018 in Texas

National Adoption Month 2018 has been a success! Hundreds of children now have warm, loving homes and hundreds of families are now whole and complete. Adoption is a beautiful thing. Every child deserves to have a home, a loving family, and a support system that will help them grow up into productive and happy adults. That is why National Adoption Month is so important. Every November, events are held that connect children with people looking to expand their hearts and grow their families.

This Year’s Theme

The theme for 2018 was “Luke and Leia Were Adopted,” referencing popular Star Wars characters. All around, people came dressed as Star Wars characters and had themed parties where children had opportunities to meet with families looking to adopt. These events reigned all over Texas, especially on the official National Adoption Day in November. All in all, this year’s theme combined popular culture with the prospect of adoption for a month of adoption success.

The Numbers

While the official numbers for 2018 haven’t been reported yet, it’s expected to meet or even exceed the numbers from last year. In 2017 in Texas, roughly 5600 children were adopted—1500 of those children were adopted during National Adoption Month events. The numbers are expected to be roughly the same this year.

What’s Next?

While National Adoption Month can be considered a success, we need to do more to ensure children end up with the loving families they deserve. There are still thousands of children in need of loving homes. It’s important that we do our part to support these children and help them find the families they need and deserve.

What Can You Do If You Want to Adopt

As you probably already know, the adoption process takes a while, including in the state of Texas. One of the best ways to get through the adoption process is to work with a family lawyer. A family lawyer will be able to help you deal with the legalities of it all, better understand the legal jargon, and get through to process much more smoothly than going in by yourself. It’s also a good idea because many adoption agencies will only work with people who have a lawyer.
